Halstead & Essex Marathon 9th May 2010
This was my first full marathon after a number of ½ marathons over the past year. For the record: 3.45.59 for 189th out of 508 finishers (from a field of 700+). Good conditions – cool following rain 1st thing. Gently undulating course through quiet and picturesque country lanes and the charming villages of Pebmarsh and Twinstead. Basically two laps; so the ‘undulations’ start to grow into hills the second time around, as they do, but to a seasoned runner it might well be a fast course. The event had a very good vibe and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty of incredibly enthusiastic marshals and a small army of eager helpers; noticeably from cadet squads and lots of incredibly encouraging supporters/villagers along the way cheering for all they’re worth, offering jelly babies, jaffa cakes etc. whether they knew you or not. The race number had our name on – another nice touch as when you’re suffering and someone cheers you on by yelling your name it does spur you to stagger on a bit longer. I’ve entered the ballot for next years London Marathon; but if I’m not successful, I will be quite happy to come back here!
